A Maryland State Police Helicopter, Trooper 3, has performed a hoist rescue on Sugarloaf Mountain, after a hiker tumbled approximately 25 feet down a rock face.

Frederick County Fire and Rescue received a call for a 63 year old female hiker who fell down a steep rock face and was unconscious. They responded to the remote area and climbed to the victim, where advanced life support care was initiated. Due to the injuries sustained, and concerns over the steep rocky, wet terrain, Maryland State Police Aviation Command was requested for the hoist rescue.

Trooper 3, responded from Frederick Municipal Airport and deployed a Rescue Technician, who worked with the Frederick County Advanced Tactical Rescue Team to secure and prepare the victim for hoisting. Trooper 3 hoisted the victim along with the Rescue Technician to the aircraft. After pulling the victim into the aircraft Trooper 3 was able to transition directly to the medical evacuation role and transport the patient directly to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Md. Advanced life support care was provided in route to the hospital. Trooper 3 arrived on scene to conduct the hoist at 12:36 p.m. and delivered the patient to the Trauma center at 1:08 P.M. The ability to conduct the hoist rescue and then transition directly to the medical role saved hours of out of hospital time for the critically injured patient. The rescue was an overwhelming success and demonstrated versatility of the crews and the AgustaWestland AW139 helicopter.

Trooper 3 was assisted at the scene by units from Frederick County Fire and Rescue and the Frederick County Advanced Tactical Rescue Team.
